Getting to Kuvhima — Airport Pickup & Travel Information

From your front door to the Limpopo bushveld — everything you need to know about getting here

Nearest Airports to Kuvhima

Kuvhima Safaris is located in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, in the Palala River valley near the Botswana border. Two airports serve our lodge, depending on your travel route and preferences:

Primary Entry Point

O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB)

Johannesburg, Gauteng — IATA Code: JNB

O.R. Tambo is the primary international gateway to South Africa and the recommended entry point for all international hunters arriving at Kuvhima. Direct flights operate from major US hubs (New York, Atlanta, Dallas), European capitals (London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Frankfurt), and most major international cities.

Drive time to Kuvhima lodge: approximately 4–4.5 hours
SAPS firearms counter located in international arrivals hall
Full international passenger facilities — baggage reclaim, customs, currency exchange, hotel transfers
Domestic Option

Polokwane Airport (PTG)

Polokwane, Limpopo — IATA Code: PTG

Polokwane (formerly known as Pietersburg) is the capital city of Limpopo Province and home to a regional airport with daily domestic flights from OR Tambo. This option is ideal if you prefer a shorter road transfer from airport to lodge — particularly useful for guests who wish to minimise travel time on arrival.

Drive time to Kuvhima lodge: approximately 1.5 hours
Domestic connection from OR Tambo — approximately 1 hour flight
Firearms must still be processed through OR Tambo — not at Polokwane
Firearms note: If you are bringing firearms, you must clear them through SAPS at O.R. Tambo International Airport on arrival — firearms cannot be imported through Polokwane Airport. If flying domestically to Polokwane, ensure you have already processed your firearms through OR Tambo before your domestic connection.

What Kuvhima Arranges for You

From the moment you land, the Kuvhima team takes responsibility for your logistics. You shouldn't have to worry about finding transport, navigating gun permits, or figuring out the road to the lodge — we have done this hundreds of times and we make it seamless.

Airport Meet & Greet

A Kuvhima representative wearing our identifiable uniform will meet you in the arrivals hall at O.R. Tambo, holding a sign with your name. You will never need to wonder where to go — we find you.

Firearms Assistance

Our representative accompanies you through the SAPS firearms counter process at OR Tambo, helping navigate the paperwork and ensuring your firearms are correctly documented and cleared for transport to the lodge.

Dedicated Vehicle Transfer

We provide a dedicated, comfortable 4x4 transfer vehicle with a professional driver for the journey from the airport to the lodge. Luggage, gun cases, and personal baggage are all accommodated — no cramped minibus with strangers.

Return Transfer

At the end of your safari, we arrange your return transfer to OR Tambo or Polokwane, timed to get you to the airport with appropriate buffer time before your international departure.

Driving to Kuvhima from Johannesburg

For guests who prefer to self-drive or who are renting a vehicle, the route from Johannesburg to the Kuvhima lodge is straightforward and well-signed. The drive takes approximately 4 to 4.5 hours under normal traffic conditions.

General Route: Johannesburg to Kuvhima Lodge

1
From OR Tambo / Johannesburg, take the N1 North towards Pretoria and Bela-Bela.
2
Continue north through Bela-Bela (Warmbaths), past Mokopane (Potgietersrus), heading towards Mokopane / Potgietersrus.
3
Turn off the N1 and head into the Limpopo Valley / Palala River area via the appropriate provincial road (R518 / R510 corridor — exact turning confirmed on booking).
4
Follow Kuvhima's GPS coordinates (provided on booking confirmation) to navigate the final section of gravel road to the lodge gate.

GPS coordinates and full detailed turn-by-turn directions are provided in your pre-safari booking confirmation. If you are self-driving for the first time, we recommend downloading an offline map for the Limpopo region in case of mobile signal gaps in remote areas.

Road conditions: The main roads (N1, N11) are in excellent condition. The final section to the lodge uses a gravel road that is navigable in a standard sedan under dry conditions. A vehicle with higher ground clearance is recommended if you are travelling after heavy rain. Kuvhima will advise on current road conditions ahead of your arrival.

What to Expect When You Arrive at the Lodge

Arriving at Kuvhima for the first time is a moment many of our clients describe as the point where the safari truly begins. The transition from highway driving to gravel roads winding through the mopane bush, and then the first sight of the thatched rooftops of the lodge above the riverine trees, is genuinely special.

Step 1
Welcome and lodge orientation. André or the senior PH on duty will greet you personally at the lodge entrance. You'll be shown around the lodge, introduced to key staff members, and given a brief orientation of the facilities — rooms, bar, dining area, boma, and pool.
Step 2
Firearm safe storage. Your firearms are removed from their cases and stored securely in the lodge gun safe. You will be asked to sign a firearms register as required by South African law. The gun safe is accessible to hunters at all times with PH supervision.
Step 3
Zero check and rifle setup. If you have arrived in time, your PH will arrange a visit to the lodge shooting range to verify that your rifle is zeroed correctly after the flight. This is strongly recommended and Kuvhima provides this as a standard part of the arrival process.
Step 4
Game plan briefing. Your PH will sit down with you over drinks to discuss your species wish list, hunting preferences, fitness level, and any specific requirements. This is when the safari is truly planned and the excitement begins to build.
Step 5
First boma dinner. That evening, your safari community gathers for the first time around the fire at the boma. Fresh impala or warthog on the braai, cold drinks, introductions, and the immediate realisation that you have arrived somewhere truly remarkable.

Travelling with Firearms to South Africa

Bringing your own rifle to South Africa is highly recommended — you know your rifle, you are familiar with its trigger and handling, and hunting with your own equipment contributes enormously to your confidence and accuracy. Here is a quick checklist for travelling with firearms to Kuvhima:

Apply for SAPS Form 520 at least 60 days before departure. The form is available from the South African embassy or consulate in your country, or from a licensed South African firearms importer.
Kuvhima assists with the invitation letter required for your permit application — contact us as soon as you begin the permit process and we will send you a formal letter of invitation on company letterhead.
Carry the following documents with your firearms at all times: SAPS 520 permit, proof of ownership for each firearm, passport, Kuvhima invitation letter, and your airline's firearms declaration receipt.
Check your airline's firearms policy before flying. Each airline has specific requirements for transporting firearms in checked baggage — typically a hard-sided locked case, unloaded, with ammunition stored separately. Confirm directly with your airline well in advance.
Bring approximately 60 rounds of ammunition per rifle. Bring more rather than less — you'll want to zero and practice, and ammunition may be difficult or expensive to source locally in your specific calibre.
